Harishchandragad is one of the best high forts near Mumbai, Maharashtra. Strong fortifications of this fort have multiple entry routes such as the Junnar gate route, Sadhale ghat, Nalichi waat and Indore waat. The carvings on the temples of Nageshwar in Khireshwar village, in the Harishchandreshwar temple and in the cave of Kedareshwar indicate that the fort belongs to the medieval period since it is related to Shaiva, Shakta or Naath. Later the fort was under the control of Moghuls. The Marathas captured it in 1747. Visapur Fort (also called Visapoor Fort) is a hill fort near Visapur village in Maharashtra, India. Marking its prominence from the 18th century, this fort forms a part of the fortification of Visapur and Lohagad.  It is located in Pune district, 5 to 6 km from Malavli Railway station out of which 3 km is steep road. Sudhagad is a hill fort having origins from 2nd century BC. In 1436, it was captured by the Brahmani Sultan which was taken over by the Marathas in 1657. Sudhagad was considered as the capital of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's kingdom. The fort has ruins of Shiva temple and a huge plateau that has two lakes, a house, a big granary, some tombs, a shrine and numerous other ruins scattered over the fort area. Sondai is a small but beautiful trek situated in the Matheran range. It is more of a watch tower than a fort. It derives its name from a local deity Sondai devi. One can get a view of Morbe dam reservoir, Irshalgad, Matheran hills and Garbett plateau from the top. Sondewadi is the base village for this trek. Sarasgad is situated on the borders of Pali. A very huge wall of Sarasgad is at the north south border of Pali. This fort was mainly used to keep a check on the surrounding regions. The fort is named after saint Goraknath, who used to perform penance here. It was used in the era of Shivaji Maharaj, mainly as a stopover point from Junnar via Naneghat. The adjoining Machindragad peak is named after the teacher-disciple relationship of Machindranath and Gorakhnath. During monsoon season, the Gorakhgad Trek takes on a whole new appearance. While there, take a moment to observe, listen and smell and you will feel the forest come alive around you. The view of the numerous cascading waterfalls and a large range of wildflowers only add to its charm. Kothaligad is situated in Karjat district. The height of this fort is approx. 3000 ft above sea level. There is a small temple and a large cave at the base and a chimney-like tunnel to the top of the fort. This pinnacle is carved from inside forming a staircase reaching the top. The stone is a single black expanse reaching till the Peth village standing on the fertile soil with abundant natural resources for water and farming. The locals say that this is not actually a fort but a sort of lighthouse from where the directions were given to know the advancements of the enemy. In fact, it can be called a watch tower to keep a vigil on the Mawal area in the greater province of the Marathas.
